Project Description

The Green at Longstone is a new development by Places for People of apartments, townhouses and terraced houses with one, two, three and four bedrooms.

Scope of Works

Working for Allenbuild, Management Contractor of Places for People, our contract involved the removal of 70,000m3 of bulk earthworks, with around 50% remaining on site, the construction of foundations and concrete slabs for 11 flatted developments and 31 townhouses, totalling over 1,500m3 of concrete and the installation of 5,000m of drainage (including attenuation tanks) within both the roads and the foundations.  The works also included over 6,500m2 of hard landscaping, the installation of ductwork for services and street lighting and the construction and surfacing of roads (over 7,500m2 of asphalt) to adoptable standards.

Challenges

Close proximity to HMP Edinburgh:
The site is located behind HMP Edinburgh and therefore the site team had to be aware of and identify any suspicious activities and report it to the prison authorities.  In addition, this was initially waste ground and was used by dog walkers and therefore Crummock had to ensure that the site was secured from the public and appropriate signage and alternative routes signposted.

Traffic Management Arrangements:
Site access is via a small roundabout opposite Lothian Buses, Longstone Bus Depot, which is located on a busy road.  During the excavation phase, Crummock had to ensure that the road was swept clean of any debris when any material was taken off site.
